A 4-day cultural deep-dive traversing the ancient caravan routes. Journey from the imperial medinas through the Sahara Desert, and deep into the towering limestone canyons of the Todra Gorges.
"The Nomadic Trails" is a carefully crafted 4-day loop that perfectly balances the endless sands of the Sahara with the dramatic, rocky architecture of the High Atlas. By dedicating four days to the south, we have the freedom to venture off the direct highway. After experiencing the magic of a luxury desert camp in Erg Chebbi, we turn westward to explore the Todra Gorges—massive 300-meter-high canyons carved by ancient rivers. This itinerary is for the traveler who wants to understand the diverse geology of Morocco and the enduring spirit of the nomadic people who have traveled these routes for centuries.
Your private driver will collect you from your Fes accommodation to begin our journey south. We first cross the Middle Atlas Mountains, stopping in the European-styled town of Ifrane and the ancient Cedar Forests to spot the wild Barbary macaques. As we descend toward the Sahara, the landscape transforms into the spectacular Ziz Valley, a massive gorge overflowing with millions of date palms. By late afternoon, we arrive in Merzouga, where you will check into a luxury desert lodge at the edge of the dunes to relax by the pool and enjoy your first Saharan dinner.
Today is devoted to the Nomadic trails of the Sahara. We will take a 4x4 deep into the desert to visit a local nomad family living in a traditional goat-hair tent. We will share mint tea and learn about their way of life. Next, we visit the village of Khamlia to experience the hypnotic, spiritual Gnawa music. In the late afternoon, your camel caravan awaits. Ride across the shifting golden dunes of Erg Chebbi to your exclusive luxury camp. Enjoy a traditional Moroccan feast, Berber drumming by the fire, and a night sleeping under a brilliant canopy of stars.
Wake early to witness a magical sunrise over the Sahara. After breakfast, we depart the dunes and travel to the ancient market town of Rissani, the historic birthplace of the Alaouite dynasty. We then drive westward into the dramatic landscapes of the High Atlas foothills. We will arrive at the spectacular Todra Gorges, where you will have time to walk through the imposing, 300-meter-high sheer limestone cliffs. We will spend the night in a beautiful luxury riad nestled in the surrounding valleys.
After a peaceful morning in the gorges, we begin our scenic loop back to the north. We will drive through the desert outpost of Errachidia and cross back over the Middle Atlas Mountains. This route offers entirely different, panoramic views of the rocky plateaus and hidden Berber villages. We will stop for a comfortable lunch along the way before finally descending back into the imperial city of Fes in the late afternoon, where your driver will drop you off at your accommodation.
